Pensions Auto Enrolment

The law on workplace pensions has recently changed, making it the employer’s legal duty to ensure that employees are placed onto a workplace pension, this is called Auto Enrolment. Auto enrolment is a legal requirement for all UK businesses or organisations that meet a certain criteria, as an employer you must automatically enrol staff who:

• are aged between 22 and State Pension age
• earn more than £10,000 a year
• work in the UK

Although it is automatic for your staff as they do not need to do anything, it is not automatic for you as an employer, as you must take the steps in order to set up auto enrolment of staff into a workplace pension scheme.

What you need to know

Each employer has their own deadline by which they must be ready for auto enrolment, this is known as your staging date. You can find you staging date by using the following link: http://www.thepensionsregulator.gov.uk/employers/staging-date.aspx

The eligibility of each employee will need to be assessed as there are other factors and exceptions which need to be considered apart from their age and earnings. You must also choose a reputable pension scheme, and you can use one of our trusted partners, who are answerable to the Parliament through DWP(Department of work and pensions). Finally you will need to properly communicate with your staff when they will be automatically enrolled, the pension provider you have chosen and also their rights and options according to the guidelines set by the Pensions Regulator. Employers who fail to comply by their deadline will face heavy fines and penalties, do not risk it.
